Hi Guest! Great question. So, D7880 is actually the correct code to bill to Medicare for removable appliances to treat TMJ disorders – it”s just that they don”t cover it! 🙂 Hope this helps!

Hi Guest! Great question. D7880 is typically considered a professional service, strangely enough! While Medicare does not offer coverage for D7880 (i am assuming you may be using this code to represent a removable appliance used to treat TMJ disorders), we do see plenty of private/commercial insurers cover this code for removable appliances to treat TMJ disorders. Since it it a “by report code”, we always suggest including a narrative report to describe what the code is being used to represent, and/or you can use the “ZZ” qualifier on the line item in field 24 and provide a short narrative description following it.
